How To Achieve The Entrepreneur's Mindset - By John Hagerty, August 2009

Michael E. Gerber in his book "The E Myth" said that most business owners were technicians who had experienced one entrepreneurial spark (when they first went into business) opposing the myth that all business owners are in fact entrepreneurs. (If you haven’t read this book yet we highly recommend it to you as a must read for anyone owning and operating a business.) The following five steps will enable you to successfully transition from technician to entrepreneur. It may be simple, but probably not easy for most. We only promise that it will be completely worthwhile. At the bottom there is a truly awesome special offer for you so please read on and enjoy.

STEP 1: CUT THE UMBILICAL CORD
This may be too painful to read but most entrepreneurs don’t have much success with their first business (sometimes not even their second or third). If we can accept this as fact then it seems pointless to get too uptight and possessive of any one business doesn’t it? Is your business your baby? Or is it just a business? A true entrepreneur can maintain their passion for what their business represents whilst remaining dispassionate towards the business itself, seeing it merely as a vehicle to success and not the end in and of itself.

STEP 2: REMEMBER WHY YOU WENT INTO BUSINESS TO BEGIN WITH
Always start with the end in mind. You most likely didn’t go into business to give yourself a job that owns you. Most probably you wanted your business to provide you with certain freedoms and advantages that a job never could. Keep these reasons close to your heart and in front of your face so you will always see and be motivated by what really matters to you.

STEP 3: DELEGATE OR AUTOMATE WHAT YOU’RE NOT GOOD AT AND WHAT YOU DON’T LIKE DOING
If you’re currently in “technician” mode you will probably struggle with this one. "No-one can do it like I can” I can hear many saying. Whenever you want to add something new to your situation you will always need to start by making room for it, so take a step back from the front line of your business. Systemise and automate any repeating tasks or procedures. Delegate as much of the grunt work as you can to employees or contract it out to service providers. Now you’ve created an opportunity to focus On The Business as a vehicle instead of always In The Business working a job that owns you.

STEP 4: GET A COACH TO P.A.V.E. THE WAY FOR YOU
Is that too blatant a self promotion? Oh well :-) in truth it really should be the first step. A Be(etc) coach will offer you a combination of coaching styles tailored to your unique needs:

PERFORMANCE COACHING is all about helping you be the best you can in your chosen field.
ACCOUNTABILITY COACHING is where we help you first to determine what steps are required for you to achieve your goals and then enable you to keep your word to yourself and follow through with action.
VISION COACHING is the first part. Here we establish your overall vision of your life and your business and the necessary goals to be achieved.
ENTREPRENEUR COACHING is there to help you transition from technician to entrepreneur.

STEP 5: STUDY HOW TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR
You probably did some kind of training to become skilled at what you’re doing now so it should seem reasonable to expect to need some training to become an entrepreneur. There's lot's of great books on the subject (like the one mentioned above) and even a few courses. You can start by attending one of our workshops.
