When I started in business two years ago I was starting from scratch. I had been an employee for 32 years. I knew I could deliver the service I offer but as to running a business, well that was another matter. As a long-standing participant and administrator in a variety of sports I remembered the tremendous benefit that a good coach offers.

I needed a business coach to show me the ropes and help me become successful. I have been working with John Hagerty from Be Business since April 2009 and to say he has helped me would be an understatement.

As my business coach John did not set out to be my friend. I appreciated this approach. However, it quickly became apparent that he was as passionate about my success as I was. John once told me that he was a bit like a pilot of a ship. Unless the vessel was underway he was just a passenger. This taught me that John could provide advice, encouragement and even great ideas but I was the one responsible for making things happen. His role as my accountability manager has been pivotal in the progress I have made so far.

John has helped me realise that things don’t need to be perfect they just have to be better. I have a tendency to procrastinate and I used to beat myself up because I hadn’t done all the things I said I would between our meetings. John pointed out that I had actually achieved more than I thought I had. He showed me that as long as we were doing something then things were getting better. This was very encouraging and a major breakthrough for me.

Like all good coaches, John has pointed me in the right direction in a business sense. He has proved an excellent sounding board for ideas, hopes and fears. His advice is always appropriate, practical and simple. Above all, it works. However, he has also provided some insights into how I need to develop as a person. So I am not only getting sound business coaching but also my personal development needs are being addressed.
